BioCat

image of biocat in actionBioCat™ is a remarkable hydrocarbon absorbent, which offers significant technical and commercial benefits to spill responders, hydrocarbon contaminated land clean up, oil sludge and hydrocarbon contaminated water treatment.

BioCat™ absorbs a wide range of hydrocarbon based materials including oils, petrol, derv, hydraulic oils, oil based paints, lubricants, solvents, epoxies and urethanes. It is also highly effective on silicone oils and polymers.

BIOCAT’S™ KEY BENEFITS ARE:

PERFORMANCE

BioCat™ absorbs or desorbs hydrocarbons on contact, leaving hard surfaces completely dry and residue free. This significantly reduces downtime and the requirement for further degreasing.

BioCat™ is up to 10 times more effective than absorbents such as calcined clay.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

Slips, Trips and Falls - One of the greatest causes of downtime, absenteeism and claims.

BioCat™ can significantly reduce or eliminate these instances, as the spill can be dealt with immediately leaving no slippy residue to present further accident risks.

Fire Suppressant

Many conventional absorbents present their own health & safety risks including increased fire risk. BioCat™ significantly reduces VOCs and is classified as non-flammable.

Occupational Exposure Limits

Many absorbents such as acid lint have low OELrsquo;s and present risks due to particulate and fume inhalation. BioCat™ OEL is safer than talc.

COST BENEFITS

BioCat’s™ high absorbency capacity combined with the use of the BioCat™ Recycling Centre mean significantly less BioCat™ is used to pick up spills than other absorbent types. Up to 10 times less! That means less product to buy, store and dispose of!

MULTIPLE DISPOSAL OPTIONS

In this climate of increasingly stringent legislation centred on waste, primarily the E.U. Landfill Directive, the volume and type of waste created is becoming a major issue. Many absorbents can only be landfilled and must be treated before disposal, therefore increasing the cost consideration.

BioCat™ offers multiple disposal options. It can be:

  • Recycled
  • Composted
  • Incinerated (leaving only 3% ash)
  • Used as a source of renewable energy
  • Landfilled*

*Under current guidelines, BioCat™ fulfils all the objectives of the E.U. Landfill Directive. These options provide further cost benefits to the waste producer.

ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS

BioCat™ is derived from a totally renewable source. It both absorbs and encapsulates hydrocarbons. This prevents leaching and the release of hydrocarbons under compaction.
Once encapsulated, the indigenous hydrocarbon reducing microbes within the fibres, in the presence of moisture, break down the contaminant. Therefore, BioCat™ reduces the hazardous nature of the waste and arrests the progress of the contaminant into the environment.

PACKAGING

BioCat™ is available in convenient 5L, 20L, 110L, & 210L resealable units. Also available are 20L and 120L Recycling Centres to ensure optimum usage is achieved.

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES

BioCat™ is supplied in dry powder form and is non-toxic, odourless and lightweight.

USAGE GUIDE

Spill Response

  • Completely cover the spill with BioCat™
  • Using a stiff brush, press BioCat™ into spill
  • Sweep back and forth until spill is fully encapsulated and the surface is completely dry and residue free

Full protocols are available for each use of BioCat™

*Compounds which have been shown to be degraded by BioCat™

The E.U. Landfill Directive Article 6(a) requires that after July 2004, lsquo;only waste that has been subject to treatment is landfilled.rsquo; Within the Article 2 definition, treatment must fulfill the ‘Three Point Test.’

BioCat™ comprehensively passes that ‘Three Point Test’

Test Reason Compliant Test

1.The waste must go through a physical, thermal, chemical or biological process including sorting

Qualifies as a:

  • Physical process - absorbs and immobilises
  • Biological process - BioCat contains hydrocarbons reducing microbes that rapidly degrade sorbed hydrocarbon into simpler compounds and eventually, carbon dioxide, water & benign inorganics

2. The Characteristics of the waste must change to reduce its hazardous nature

  • Produces negligible leachate
  • Will not release under compaction
  • Reduces flammable vapours
  • Degrades the contamiant

3. The process must facilitate the waste handling or recovery

  • Encapsulates and immobilises the hydrogen

Under current guidelines, BioCat™ meets all the objectives of the E.U. Landfill Directive and meets the requirements of the ‘Three Point Test’

Treatment / Absorbent Test 1 - Process Type Test 2 - Reduce Hazardous Nature Test 3 - Facilitate Handling or Recovery Meets Directive Requirements Reason Unacceptable
